The $0 Family Fun Challenge: Can You Make a Great Family Memory Without Spending a Dime?

Because some of the best family memories don't come with a price tag.

Let's be honest.

Family fun can get expensive.

A trip to the movies.
Dinner out.
Tickets to an event.
Arcades.
Bowling.
Museums.
Sports.
Even a quick trip to the store with the kids can somehow turn into $40.

And sometimes there just isn't extra money for entertainment.

But here's the thing:

Your family doesn't need to spend money to have a good day together.

Sometimes the best memories happen in the living room, the backyard, the kitchen, the library, or on a walk around the neighborhood.

So we're giving Michigan families a challenge:

THE $0 FAMILY FUN CHALLENGE

Pick one idea.

Spend $0.

And make a memory.

1. Build a Blanket Fort

Grab every blanket and pillow you can find.

Build the biggest, most ridiculous fort possible.

Then climb inside.

Read books.
Watch a movie you already have.
Tell stories.
Eat snacks.

Bonus points if Mom gets to claim the best spot.

2. Have a Living Room Movie Night

You don't need to go to the theater.

Turn off the lights.

Make popcorn.

Pile everyone onto the couch.

Let the kids choose the movie.

And yes…

It is completely acceptable to watch something you've seen 47 times.

3. Have a Living Room Picnic

Put a blanket on the floor.

Make whatever you already have in the kitchen.

Sandwiches? Great.

Leftovers? Perfect.

Cereal? We've all been there.

Put on some music and eat somewhere you normally wouldn't.

Sometimes changing where you eat makes an ordinary meal feel completely different.

4. Make a Family Scavenger Hunt

Give everyone a list of things to find.

Something red.

Something shaped like a circle.

Something older than you.

Something that makes you laugh.

Something that starts with the letter B.

Something outside that shouldn't be there.

The possibilities are endless.

5. Have a Family Dance Party

Pick everyone's favorite songs.

Clear the living room.

Turn the music up.

Dance terribly.

Actually, the worse you dance, the better.

Kids usually don't care whether you can dance.

They just want you to join them.

6. Go on a “Find Something New” Walk

You don't have to go somewhere special.

Walk around your neighborhood.

Go to a nearby park.

Take a different route than usual.

Look for:

  • Different leaves

  • Birds

  • Interesting houses

  • Flowers

  • Rocks

  • Bugs

  • Halloween decorations

  • Something you've never noticed before

You might be surprised by what you find five minutes from home.

7. Have a Library Adventure

Your local library can be a fantastic free family resource.

Let everyone pick a book.

Look for children's activities.

Check out a new section.

Find a book about something your child is currently obsessed with.

And remember:

The library doesn't have to be a place you only go when you need a book.

It can be part of your family's regular routine.

8. Let the Kids Plan Dinner

Open the pantry.

Open the refrigerator.

Give the kids three choices.

Then let them decide.

It doesn't have to be fancy.

It might even be breakfast for dinner.

The point isn't the meal.

It's letting them be part of it.

9. Look Through Old Family Pictures

Pull out your phone.

Scroll back.

Show the kids pictures of themselves when they were little.

Tell them stories about things they don't remember.

Ask:

“Do you remember this?”

They probably won't.

And that's okay.

You're creating a new memory while looking at an old one.

10. Have a “Make Something” Afternoon

Paper.

Crayons.

Markers.

Cardboard.

Old magazines.

Whatever you already have.

Make something.

Don't worry about whether it looks good.

Make a family collage.

Draw each other.

Create superheroes.

Design your dream house.

Make paper Halloween decorations.

There are no rules.

But Here's the Real Challenge…

Don't just pick one.

Pick one every week.

Four weeks.

Four free family activities.

Four opportunities to make memories without spending money.

And when you're finished, tell us what you did.

We want to hear from you.

Comment:

“We did ______!”

Or tell us:

What is your family's favorite FREE activity?

Maybe your idea will make next month's list.

And Here's Something We Want Families to Remember

At KindNest, we know that sometimes families are trying to stretch every dollar.

And when you're worrying about groceries, diapers, clothing, utilities, transportation, baby supplies or other everyday needs, fun can feel like something that has to wait.

But your family still deserves moments of laughter.

You still deserve memories.

And you don't have to spend money to create them.

At the same time, if your family does need practical support, we want you to know that you can reach out.

You don't have to wait until things become a crisis.

Need Support From KindNest?

KindNest provides practical support to families, including care packages with items such as:

Sometimes helping a family starts with something as simple as:

“Hey, have you heard about KindNest?”

The $0 Family Fun Challenge

So here's our challenge for you:

Pick ONE thing from this list.

Do it with your family.

Spend $0.

Take a picture if you want.

Tell us what you did.

And then ask your kids:

“What was your favorite part?”

You might be surprised by their answer.

Because sometimes we think our kids need a big experience.

A big trip.

A big activity.

A big purchase.

And sometimes what they really wanted was:

Mom sitting beside them.

Dad joining the game.

A blanket fort.

A dance party.

A walk.

A bowl of popcorn.

A little bit of your time.

Now It's Your Turn

What is your family's favorite FREE thing to do together?

Fill in the blank:

“Our family's favorite $0 activity is ______.”

And if your family needs a little support right now, remember:

You don't have to figure everything out alone.

KindNest is here to listen, connect families with resources, and provide practical support when available.

Sometimes the best thing you can give your family doesn't cost anything at all.

Your time.
Your attention.
Your laughter.
Your presence.

And those are memories your kids can keep forever.
