What if sometimes you didn't have to explain it all?
There are days when someone asks:
“What do you need?”
And honestly?
You don't know how to answer.
Maybe you need help, but you don't know how to explain what kind.
Maybe you're overwhelmed.
Maybe you need someone to listen.
Maybe you need dinner, diapers, a break, a hug, a quiet room, a little encouragement—or maybe you just need somebody to say, “I've got you.”
Sometimes the hardest part isn't needing help.
It's finding the words to ask for it.
So what if we made up our own language?
A language where you could simply hand someone a color.
No long explanation.
No trying to find the right words.
Just:
“Today, I need blue.”
And somehow, they understand.
Let's Make Our Own Color Language
There aren't any official meanings here.
These are just the meanings KindNest is giving them for this little game.
And you can absolutely change them.
Because maybe blue means calm to you.
Maybe red means love.
Maybe yellow means please bring me coffee immediately.
That's the fun part.
You get to decide.
BLUE — “I Need Some Peace.”
Blue is the color you hand someone when everything feels too loud.
Too many questions.
Too many responsibilities.
Too many notifications.
Too many people needing something from you.
Blue means:
“I don't necessarily need you to fix anything. I just need a little peace.”
Maybe that means sitting quietly.
Taking a shower without someone knocking on the door.
Going for a drive.
Putting your phone down.
Or simply having ten minutes where nobody needs anything.
If you could hand someone blue today, what would your blue look like?
YELLOW — “I Need Encouragement.”
Yellow is sunshine.
It's the:
“You can do this.”
The:
“You're doing better than you think.”
The:
“Keep going.”
Sometimes we don't need somebody to solve our problems.
We just need someone to remind us that we're capable of getting through them.
Yellow means:
“Please remind me that I'm not failing.”
RED — “I Need Love.”
Not advice.
Not a lecture.
Not a list of things you should be doing.
Just love.
Red means:
“Can you remind me that I'm loved even when I'm having a really hard day?”
It might look like a hug.
A phone call.
A text that says, “Thinking about you.”
Someone bringing dinner.
Someone sitting beside you.
Sometimes love doesn't need a big speech.
Sometimes it just needs to show up.
GREEN — “I Need Help.”
Green is the color for the days when you're trying really hard to keep everything together…
…but you're running out of hands.
Green means:
“Can you help me?”
Maybe you need help with the kids.
Maybe you need groceries.
Maybe you need help finding resources.
Maybe you need somebody to help you figure out what to do next.
And here's the important part:
Needing help doesn't mean you aren't capable.
It means you're human.
PURPLE — “I Need Someone to Listen.”
Purple is for the:
“I don't need advice right now.”
The:
“Please just let me get this out.”
The:
“I don't even know what I'm feeling, but I need to say it.”
Sometimes being heard is the help.
You don't always need someone to tell you what to do.
Sometimes you just need someone to say:
“I hear you.”
PINK — “I Need a Little Extra Care.”
Pink is for the days when you're running on empty.
When you're taking care of everyone else and realizing you haven't taken care of yourself.
Pink means:
“Can somebody take care of me for a minute?”
Maybe it's a meal.
A coffee.
A bath.
A nap.
A kind message.
Someone taking the kids for an hour.
A reminder that you matter, too.
Because the person taking care of everyone else deserves care.
ORANGE — “I Need Something Fun.”
This one is important.
Orange means:
“Can we stop talking about everything that's wrong for a minute?”
Let's laugh.
Let's take the kids somewhere.
Let's have a movie night.
Let's make ridiculous pancakes.
Let's dance in the kitchen.
Let's go look at Halloween decorations.
Let's do something that doesn't have to accomplish anything.
Sometimes families don't need another task.
They just need a little fun.
LIGHT BLUE — “I Don't Know What I Need.”
This might actually be one of the most important colors.
Light blue means:
“Something is wrong. I just don't know what.”
Maybe you're overwhelmed.
Maybe you're exhausted.
Maybe you're anxious.
Maybe you're lonely.
Maybe you have ten things going on and can't figure out which one needs attention first.
You don't have to know.
You can simply say:
“Light blue.”
And let someone help you figure out what comes next.
BLACK — “I'm Having a Really Hard Day.”
Black isn't bad.
It's just heavy.
Black means:
“Today is a lot.”
Maybe you're grieving.
Maybe you're overwhelmed.
Maybe something happened that you weren't prepared for.
Maybe you're simply having one of those days where getting out of bed felt like an accomplishment.
Black means:
“Please don't expect me to have it all together today.”
And sometimes the kindest thing someone can do is simply stay.
WHITE — “I Need a Fresh Start.”
White is a blank page.
A reset.
A breath.
A:
“Can we just start over?”
Maybe yesterday was terrible.
Maybe this morning didn't go well.
Maybe you lost your patience.
Maybe dinner burned.
Maybe the house is a disaster.
Maybe you made a decision you wish you could redo.
White says:
“Today doesn't have to look like yesterday.”
You get to start again.
But Here's Where It Gets Really Interesting…
What if you could pick three colors?
One for what you need from other people.
One for what you're feeling.
And one for what you wish someone would give you.
For example:
Blue — I need quiet.
Purple — I need someone to listen.
Orange — I need something fun.
Or:
Green — I need help.
Pink — I need care.
Yellow — I need encouragement.
Or maybe yours is:
Light Blue — I don't even know what I need.
And that's okay, too.
Now It's Your Turn
Let's make this a KindNest community color dictionary.
If you could hand someone ONE color instead of having to explain what you need, what color would you choose?
And what would it mean?
Maybe:
Blue = “I need a break.”
Or:
Green = “I need someone to help me figure this out.”
Or maybe you create an entirely new meaning.
Tell us:
My color would be ______ because I need ______.
And here's another one:
What color would you give another mom who needs to know she's doing okay?
Maybe We Don't Always Need the Right Words
One of the hardest things about asking for help is feeling like you have to explain everything first.
You don't.
Sometimes you can start with:
“I'm overwhelmed.”
Sometimes it's:
“I don't know where to start.”
Sometimes it's:
“I just need someone to listen.”
And sometimes…
you just need to hand somebody a color.
At KindNest, we want families to know that you don't have to have the perfect words before you reach out.
If you need help finding resources, figuring out where to start, or seeing whether KindNest may be able to help with practical family needs, you can start here:

Visit KindNest: https://www.kindnestproject.org/
Email: hello@kindnestproject.org
Because sometimes the first step isn't knowing exactly what you need.
Sometimes the first step is simply saying, “I need something.”
And that's enough to start.
Let's Build the KindNest Color Dictionary
This could actually become something bigger.
If enough moms participate, we could create “The KindNest Color Dictionary” based on what our community says the colors mean.
Not what a textbook says.
Not what a website says.
What moms say.
Because maybe your red means love.
Someone else's red means “I'm angry.”
Someone else's red means “I need somebody right now.”
And that's what makes this fun.
There doesn't have to be one right answer.
So…
What color are you today?
And what does it mean?
