Goodbye October. Hello November.

A new month means a new list of things happening around Michigan.

November can be a beautiful month, but it can also be stressful for families.

The weather gets colder. Thanksgiving is approaching. Grocery bills can feel heavier. Holiday expenses are coming. Parents are trying to balance work, school, activities, and everything else that comes with everyday family life.

So this month, we're putting together something a little different.

FOOD ASSISTANCE & FOOD BANKS

If groceries are becoming difficult to afford, please don't wait until your pantry is completely empty before looking for help.

Michigan has food banks, food pantries, mobile distributions, community meal programs, and other food resources.

Food Bank of Eastern Michigan

For families in the Flint and Genesee County area, the Food Bank of Eastern Michigan is an important place to start when looking for food assistance.

Food Bank of Eastern Michigan

The Food Bank works with community partners to help connect families with food assistance throughout the region.

Rather than assuming the food bank itself is the location where every family picks up food, check its current assistance information and partner pantry listings before visiting.

Flint & Genesee County

Other community organizations also provide basic-needs assistance.

For example:

Project Thirty6 Food Pantry & Clothing Closet - Hillside Church

This Flint organization provides food assistance and a clothing closet.

Crossover Outreach

Crossover Outreach provides basic-needs assistance to Flint and Genesee County residents and is also involved in mobile food distributions.

Always confirm distribution dates and eligibility before traveling.

THANKSGIVING FOOD HELP

As Thanksgiving gets closer, more organizations begin offering:

  • Thanksgiving food boxes

  • Turkeys

  • Holiday meal packages

  • Food distributions

  • Community dinners

  • Grocery assistance

  • Holiday meal giveaways

One example we found is the November 14 Family Resource Fair in Detroit, which includes Thanksgiving turkeys and meal grocery packages while supplies last.

Another resource to keep an eye on is your local food bank, pantry, church, school, community center, and neighborhood organization.

Don't wait until Thanksgiving week to start looking.

Many programs have limited supplies or registration deadlines.

LOOKING FOR A JOB?

November can also be a great time to work on your career goals.

FOR MOMS

November can be a particularly busy month for moms.

Between school schedules, work, Thanksgiving planning, grocery shopping, family obligations, and preparing for the holidays, it's easy to put yourself at the bottom of the list.

So this month, look for opportunities that are for you, too.

Check your local:

  • Library

  • Parks and recreation department

  • Michigan Works! office

  • Community college

  • Parenting organization

for free or low-cost:

You don't have to wait until you're completely overwhelmed before finding support.

A QUICK NOVEMBER CHECKLIST

Before the month gets away from you, take a few minutes to check these things:

□ Check your local food pantry schedule

□ Look for Thanksgiving food assistance

□ Check your children's library calendar

□ Look for free family activities

□ Check Michigan Works! for job fairs

□ Update your resume

□ Look for free career workshops

□ Check your local community center

□ Look for holiday assistance programs

□ Save a few resources for later

You don't have to use everything on this list.

Just knowing where to look can make a difference.

DON'T FORGET ABOUT 211

If you aren't sure where to start, Michigan 211 can be a great starting point for finding local assistance.

You can use 211 to look for resources related to things such as:

  • Food

  • Housing

  • Utilities

  • Transportation

  • Employment

  • Childcare

  • Healthcare

  • Family support

  • Community programs

Sometimes the hardest part isn't asking for help.

It's knowing who to ask.

NOVEMBER IS ABOUT COMMUNITY

This month, we're going to keep looking for ways to help Michigan families find:

Food.

Resources.

Jobs.

Free activities.

Community support.

And a little breathing room.

Because sometimes a resource doesn't solve everything.

But it can make one part of the week a little easier.

And sometimes that's exactly what a family needs.

HAVE A NOVEMBER RESOURCE WE SHOULD KNOW ABOUT?

We're always looking for more resources to share with Michigan families.

Know about a:

  • Food pantry?

  • Thanksgiving giveaway?

  • Free kids' event?

  • Mom's group?

  • Job fair?

  • Career fair?

  • Hiring event?

  • Community resource fair?

  • Free workshop?

Tell us about it in the comments.

We'll keep adding helpful resources as we find them.

And if you see an event or resource that could help another family, share this post with them.

You never know who might need it.
