Monday, October 5: What's Happening in Michigan This Month?
October is here — and there is a LOT happening for Michigan families.
Food distributions.
Free and low-cost health services.
Flu shots.
Trunk-or-Treats.
Fall festivals.
Community dinners.
Family activities.
School and children's events.
Donation drives.
And organizations across Michigan opening their doors to help families.
So instead of making you search through a dozen different websites and Facebook pages, we're going to start the month by putting some of it all in one place.
Welcome to KindNest's October Family Resource Roundup.
Food Help & Food Drives
Fall can be an expensive time for families. School is back, grocery prices add up, and the holidays are getting closer.
There are organizations throughout Michigan offering food distributions, food pantries, community meals and food drives.
In Flint and Genesee County, families can start with the Food Bank of Eastern Michigan, which coordinates food distributions and mobile food pantries throughout the region. The City of Flint also maintains a list of food resources, including food giveaways, meal sites and organizations providing emergency groceries. City of Flint
There are also local organizations and churches helping families directly.
For example:
Flint City Church's Neighborhood Pantry has a large food giveaway scheduled for October 17, along with weekly Wednesday food boxes. Flint City Church
Flint First Wesleyan Church has a food distribution scheduled for October 10, along with free community dinners throughout the month. Flint First Wesleyan Church
Asbury Community Development Corporation lists weekday pantry hours and a Tuesday food drive, along with the South Flint Soup Kitchen. Flint Asbury CDC
And this is just the beginning.
If your family needs food, please don't wait until the refrigerator is empty to ask for help.
Need a Flu Shot?
October is also a good time to get the family ready for flu season.
Michigan recommends annual flu vaccination for people age 6 months and older who don't have a contraindication, and the state notes that vaccination by the end of October gives the body time to build protection before flu activity typically increases. Michigan.gov
And here's something important:
A flu shot doesn't necessarily have to mean a big medical bill.
Michigan points families toward local health departments, pharmacies, community clinics and federally qualified health centers for vaccinations. Children who meet certain eligibility requirements may qualify for vaccines through the Vaccines for Children program. Michigan.gov
Adults who are uninsured or underinsured may also qualify for no-cost vaccines through Michigan's Adult Vaccine Program at participating providers. Michigan.gov
So if you've been putting off that flu shot because of cost, ask what options are available before assuming you can't afford it.
Halloween Is Already Happening
You don't have to wait until October 31 for Halloween fun.
Churches, nonprofits, community centers, libraries and organizations across Michigan are already planning Trunk-or-Treats, fall festivals, Halloween parties and family events.
And if you're in Genesee County, this is one of the things we definitely want families to know about.
Genesee Health Plan has put together a 2026 Trunk-or-Treat roundup, with events organized by week:
October 1–11
October 12–18
October 19–25
October 26–31
Their list is being updated as new events are added. Genesee Health Plan
That means families don't have to wait until Halloween night to find something fun to do.
Looking for Free Family Activities?
Don't forget about places like your local library.
The Gloria Coles Flint Public Library has family programming throughout October, including its Hallo-Palooza celebration on October 24 for babies, children, tweens, teens and adults. Flint Public Library
Libraries can be an especially great resource when you're looking for something to do with your kids that doesn't require spending $50 on an afternoon.
Check your local library's calendar before assuming there isn't anything happening.
And Don't Forget About Community Organizations
Sometimes the best resources aren't the ones that show up first in a Google search.
They're the church down the road.
The community center.
The food pantry.
The neighborhood organization.
The library.
The nonprofit that runs a monthly giveaway.
The organization hosting a free dinner.
The group collecting coats before winter.
The business holding a food drive.
The people who live in your community are often part of the resource network, too.
That's one of the things we love about October.
There are so many people looking for ways to help.

Have You Heard About Something We Haven't?
This is where we need YOU.
If you know of a Michigan organization, church, school, nonprofit, business or community group hosting something for families this month, tell us about it.
Maybe it's:
A food drive
A free flu clinic
A Trunk-or-Treat
A Halloween event
A coat giveaway
A diaper distribution
A free community meal
A children's activity
A fall festival
A resource fair
A donation drive
A family-friendly event
Drop it in the comments or send it to KindNest.
We want this to become a community-sourced October resource list, not just a list we create ourselves.
Because the more we share, the more families we can reach.
Start October With This Challenge
Before you scroll away today, think about one thing:
What does your family need this month?
Food?
Clothing?
Diapers?
Healthcare?
Something fun for the kids?
A Halloween event?
Help finding a resource?
Someone to point you in the right direction?
Whatever it is, don't be afraid to look for help.
And if you know another family who might need the information in this post, share it with them.
You never know who might be sitting at their kitchen table wondering where they're going to find their next meal, pay for a prescription, get their child a coat, or simply find something fun to do with their kids without spending money.
Sometimes sharing a resource is a form of support, too.
