Monday: Little Ways to Save Money, Feel Better & Start the Week Off Right

Monday can be expensive.

Breakfast on the way to work. Coffee because you barely slept. A quick lunch because there wasn't time to pack one. A gym membership you aren't using. Another activity for the kids.

And suddenly, the little things are adding up.

So this Monday, instead of talking about doing more, let's talk about finding more affordable ways to do the things you already need or want to do.

Here are a few Flint-area ideas worth knowing about this week.

Coffee Without Spending $7 Every Morning

Let's be honest: sometimes that morning coffee feels less like a luxury and more like survival.

But you don't necessarily have to spend a fortune to get out of the house, grab a cup of coffee, and have a few minutes to yourself.

Mott Community College's Coffee Beanery is open Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Friday from 8 a.m. to noon. It offers coffee, breakfast and lunch items, and baked goods prepared through the Culinary Arts Institute. Purchases also help support culinary student scholarships.

And if you're a UM-Flint student, there are additional ways to save around town. The university's current student discount program includes Bayt and Brew with 10% off when you show your MCard, as well as Cafe Rhema with 20% off food.

Little reminder: If you already have a student ID, membership, employee discount, senior discount or other qualifying card, ask before you pay. You might be surprised by what is available.

A Breakfast for Less Than $8

Sometimes a real breakfast is exactly what you need to make Monday feel a little less chaotic.

Mega Classic Diner currently lists everyday breakfast specials from 4–10 a.m.:

  • Two eggs with bacon, ham or sausage and toast — $6.99

  • Add hash browns or grits — $7.99

  • French toast or hotcakes with your choice of meat — $6.99

  • Half-order biscuits and gravy — $4.99

They are located at 4462 Corunna Road in Flint and are open 24 hours.

That's the kind of information we love finding for families: a real meal without turning breakfast into a $20 stop.

And if you're looking for another breakfast option, Hill Road Grille at 2160 W. Hill Road says it serves breakfast specials, omelets, breakfast burritos and other breakfast favorites and is open daily starting at 7 a.m.

Want to Work Out Without Paying for a Fancy Gym?

This one is especially worth knowing.

UM-Flint currently offers free drop-in group fitness classes to students and Recreation Center members. The fall schedule includes yoga, strength training, cycling, mobility and conditioning classes.

And there are classes happening right now.

For example, today's schedule includes:

Power Sculpt — 6:30–7:30 p.m.

It's a full-body strength workout using bodyweight exercises, light dumbbells and functional movements. The current class listing shows the cost as FREE.

Tomorrow, there's also Balance & Mobility from 11 a.m. to noon, listed as free.

And Wednesday has U-Fit and Wallates, both currently listed as free.

You don't have to spend hundreds of dollars on a gym membership to move your body.

Sometimes you just need to know where the free opportunities are.

What About the YMCA?

The Flint YMCA is another option for families looking for fitness without paying traditional gym prices.

The YMCA offers income-based membership pricing, so membership costs can vary based on circumstances. Membership includes access to its Downtown and Pierson Road locations, and the YMCA currently lists group fitness classes including Zumba, yoga, bootcamp, stretch and flex, water aerobics, boxing and cardio classes.

They also offer free morning coffee.

So if you're thinking, "I really want to get healthier, but I can't afford another expensive monthly bill," it may be worth asking about financial assistance rather than assuming a gym isn't an option.

And Sometimes Wellness Doesn't Mean a Workout

Maybe you don't need a hard workout.

Maybe you need to stretch.

Maybe you need 30 minutes where nobody is asking you for anything.

Maybe you need to get out of the house.

There are community programs around Flint that offer free or low-cost wellness opportunities, including yoga, meditation, walking groups and other activities.

The important part isn't finding the "perfect" workout.

It's finding something you'll actually enjoy enough to keep doing.

A Monday Challenge: Find One Free Thing

Here's your challenge for this week:

Find one thing you can do for free.

It could be:

  • A free workout

  • A walk

  • A library program

  • A community event

  • A free family activity

  • A free wellness class

  • Sitting outside with your coffee

  • Calling a friend

  • Having a family movie night at home

  • Taking the kids somewhere you don't have to spend money

It doesn't have to be impressive.

It just has to be something that makes your week a little better without making your budget a little worse.

Before You Spend Money, Check First

This might be one of the best habits we can build as a community.

Before paying full price, ask:

Is there a discount?

Is there a free option?

Is there a community program?

Does my membership or student ID get me a deal?

Is there a weekday special?

Is there somewhere nearby offering the same thing for less?

There are so many programs, discounts, specials and community resources that families simply don't know about.

And that's one of the reasons The KindNest Project exists.

We don't believe families should have to figure everything out alone.
