Halfway There: A Wednesday Reminder to Breathe, Reset & Have Something to Look Forward To
You made it halfway through the week.
Stop for a second.
Seriously.
Take a breath.
Look at everything you've already done this week.
The lunches packed.
The laundry.
The work.
The appointments.
The school drop-offs.
The emails.
The dishes.
The errands.
The toddler who somehow needed a snack approximately 47 times.
The teenager who needed a ride.
The baby who decided sleep was optional.
The things nobody saw.
The things nobody thanked you for.
The things you still have left to do.
You're halfway there.
And today, we're not going to give you another list of things you should be doing.
We're going to give you permission to pause.
Welcome to Mental Health Wednesday
Mental health doesn't always look like a major breakthrough.
Sometimes it looks like:
Taking a shower.
Going outside.
Calling a friend.
Putting your phone down.
Laughing with your kids.
Getting enough sleep.
Saying no.
Asking for help.
Taking ten quiet minutes.
Leaving the house when you've been inside all day.
Or simply admitting:
“This week has been a lot.”
You don't have to wait until everything falls apart to take care of yourself.
You are allowed to take care of your mind before you're completely exhausted.
Mom, You Don't Have to Earn Rest
This is something we want to say a little louder.
You don't have to finish everything before you're allowed to rest.
The laundry will still be there.
The dishes will still be there.
The emails will still be there.
The toys will still be there.
And yes...
That one mysterious sock will probably still be sitting in the hallway.
You don't have to accomplish everything to deserve a moment to yourself.
Rest isn't a reward for finishing your responsibilities.
Sometimes rest is what helps you keep going.
What Would Feel Good This Weekend?
Instead of asking:
“What do we need to get done?”
Try asking:
“What would feel good?”
Maybe your answer is:
Being outside.
Seeing people.
Doing absolutely nothing.
Taking the kids somewhere.
Going somewhere you've never been.
Having coffee without someone asking for a bite.
Laughing.
Getting out of the house.
Staying home.
Being around people who make you feel like yourself again.
There isn't a wrong answer.
And If You Need Something to Look Forward To...
We've got you.
Here are a few things happening around Flint, Genesee County, and the surrounding area this weekend — September 18–20.
Because sometimes mental health care can be as simple as giving yourself something to look forward to.
📚 Friday, September 18: Storytime at Applewood
If you have little ones and need an easy reason to get out of the house, this one is worth putting on the calendar.
Storytime at Applewood is a family-friendly drop-in program with stories and activity stations celebrating the natural world and community.
When:
Friday, September 18
11:30 a.m.–12:30 p.m.
Where:
Applewood: The Charles Stewart Mott Estate
1400 E. Kearsley St.
Flint, MI 48503
Cost:
Free
No reservations are required.
Storytime may be held outdoors depending on the weather, so bring a blanket or chair and dress for the elements. ASL interpretation is also available subject to interpreter availability.
A little fresh air.
A little storytime.
A change of scenery.
Sometimes that's exactly what a Friday needs.
🌿 Saturday, September 19: Mindfulness Walk + Herb Tasting
This one might be especially appropriate for Mental Health Wednesday.
Applewood is hosting a Mindfulness Walk + Herb Tasting, featuring an exploration of the herb garden with an optional tasting.
When:
Saturday, September 19
11:30 a.m.–12:30 p.m.
Where:
Applewood: The Charles Stewart Mott Estate
1400 E. Kearsley St.
Flint, MI 48503
The experience gives you an opportunity to slow down, walk, notice what's around you, and spend a little time outside.
Sometimes you don't need to fix anything.
You just need to walk.
Breathe.
Notice what's around you.
And give your brain somewhere else to be for a little while.
Good to know: Applewood's visitor parking is accessed from Walnut Street. Because of September 2026 road work on Longway Boulevard, Applewood recommends using Kearsley Street to reach the visitor parking area. GPS directions to 305 Walnut St., Flint will take you to the visitor parking lot.
🍎 September 17–20: St. John Applefest in Fenton
If you're looking for something with a little more energy, the 54th Annual St. John Applefest is happening all weekend in Fenton.
This is one of those events where you can show up without needing to create a complicated family itinerary.
There are carnival rides, children's games, face painting, food, vendors, entertainment, a farmers market, and — of course — apple pie.
When:
Thursday, September 17–Sunday, September 20
For the weekend:
Friday: 3–11 p.m.
Saturday: 10 a.m.–11 p.m.
Sunday: 11 a.m.–6 p.m.
Where:
St. John the Evangelist Catholic Parish
600 N. Adelaide St.
Fenton, MI 48430
Admission:
Free
Individual rides, food, and some activities may have their own costs.
Saturday includes a 5K/10K road race and walk/run, pancake breakfast, carnival rides, children's activities, vendors, food, and live music.
Sunday brings more family activities, the farmers market, carnival rides, and the annual apple pie judging and auction.
Sometimes a little chaos is exactly what you need.
Kids running around.
Music playing.
Apple pie.
A carnival ride.
Someone asking for a snack.
Again.
And again.
And again.
It's okay.
Go make a memory.
🎶 Saturday, September 19: Carriage Town Porch Fest
If you're looking for something more community-centered, Carriage Town Porch Fest is happening Saturday evening in Flint.
Local musicians will perform throughout the historic Carriage Town neighborhood while food vendors and craft vendors add to the atmosphere.
When:
Saturday, September 19
5–10 p.m.
Where:
Carriage Town — W. First Avenue & Mason Street
Flint, MI 48503
Cost:
Free
The event takes place across several closed city blocks.
Bring a comfortable chair and come early if you'd like to settle in and enjoy the evening.
Community is good for us.
Not because being around people magically fixes everything.
But because sometimes we need to remember:
We're part of something.
🎭 Looking for Something Different?
You don't have to choose a children's activity every weekend.
Maybe your version of self-care is:
Theater.
Music.
Art.
A quiet afternoon.
A night out.
Mental health doesn't have to look the same for everyone.
Explore what's happening around Flint and Genesee County this weekend and find something that fits your family — or just you.
🍂 Michigan Is Starting to Feel Like Fall
And if you're willing to take a little road trip, Michigan's fall season is beginning to show up everywhere.
Apple festivals.
Cider mills.
Fall markets.
Outdoor events.
Football.
Changing leaves.
Pumpkin patches coming soon.
Give yourself something to look forward to.
It doesn't have to be a vacation.
It can be Saturday morning.
It can be a walk.
It can be a cup of cider.
It can be watching your kids run around outside.
It can be sitting somewhere beautiful for 20 minutes.
Here's Your Mental Health Wednesday Challenge
Not a 30-day challenge.
Not a lifestyle overhaul.
Just one thing.
Choose ONE thing that would make this weekend feel better.
☐ Go for a walk.
☐ Visit a library.
☐ Take your kids somewhere new.
☐ Sit outside.
☐ Call someone you miss.
☐ Go to a free community event.
☐ Have coffee with a friend.
☐ Spend an hour without your phone.
☐ Take yourself somewhere you've been wanting to go.
☐ Stay home and do absolutely nothing.
☐ Ask someone for help.
☐ Let someone help you.
Pick one.
That's enough.
And Mom...
If you're reading this while sitting in your car...
Take a breath.
If you're reading this while hiding in the bathroom...
Take two.
If you're reading this while trying to answer an email with a toddler climbing on you...
We see you.
If you're reading this after a hard morning...
The morning is over.
You get another few hours.
If today has been terrible...
The day isn't over yet.
And if this entire week has felt like too much...
You don't have to solve your whole life today.
Just get through today.
Then tomorrow.
Then Friday.
And suddenly...
It's Saturday.
You Made It This Far
Sometimes we spend so much time thinking about what's next that we forget to acknowledge what we've already survived.
You made it through Monday.
You made it through Tuesday.
You're here on Wednesday.
That's something.
Maybe not something that belongs on a trophy.
But something worth recognizing.
Give Yourself Something to Look Forward To
This weekend doesn't have to be perfect.
The kids might argue.
Someone might spill something.
You might forget something at home.
The weather might change.
The toddler might have a meltdown in public.
Your plans might change completely.
That's life.
The goal isn't a perfect weekend.
The goal is finding a few moments that feel good.
A laugh.
A walk.
A conversation.
A beautiful sunset.
A child's excitement.
A good meal.
Music.
A quiet cup of coffee.
A hug.
A deep breath.
A moment where you think:
“Okay. This is nice.”
Those moments matter.
If You Need More Support
And if what you're carrying feels bigger than needing a weekend activity or a little time to yourself, please don't feel like you have to carry it alone.
Talking to someone you trust can be a starting point.
A doctor or mental health professional can also help you figure out what kind of support may be appropriate.
If you're in emotional distress, you can call or text 988 to reach the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline. It is available 24/7, and you don't have to be suicidal to reach out for support. If you or someone else is in immediate danger, call 911.
The KindNest Resource Library can also be a starting point for finding community resources related to mental health, parenting, food, housing, baby essentials, employment, and other family needs.
Sometimes the first step isn't solving everything.
It's simply finding the right place to start.
This Week's Reminder
You don't have to have everything figured out.
You don't have to be productive every minute.
You don't have to make every weekend magical.
You don't have to be the mom who does everything.
You are allowed to simply be a person.
A tired person.
A happy person.
A frustrated person.
A hopeful person.
A person who needs a break.
A person who needs help.
A person who needs community.
A person who needs a little fun.
All of it is okay.
So... What's Your Weekend Looking Like?
We want to know.
What are you looking forward to this weekend?
Are you going somewhere?
Staying home?
Taking the kids somewhere?
Getting some alone time?
Going to a community event?
Having a family dinner?
Sleeping in?
Doing absolutely nothing?
Tell us in the comments.
Maybe your weekend idea will give another mom something to look forward to.
And if you see an event that another family might enjoy...
Share it.
That's part of building a community too.
Happy Wednesday, KindNest Families
You've made it halfway.
Take a breath.
Give yourself some grace.
Find something to look forward to.
And remember:
You don't have to carry the whole week at once.
Just today.
Then tomorrow.
Then Friday.
And before you know it...
It's the weekend.
And if today doesn't feel like you've got it?
That's okay too.
That's why we have each other.
KindNest
KindNest is here to help families find practical support, community resources, and connections when they need them.
Need support?
Explore the KindNest Resource Library or learn more about requesting assistance.
Want to help?
Donate essentials, make a financial contribution, volunteer, partner with KindNest, or simply share a resource with another family.
Sometimes helping a family starts with something as simple as saying:
“I know somewhere you can start.”
